First Generation Connections Event

This event celebrates the stories and journeys of SWAG合集students, alumni, and staff who are in the first generation of their family to attend university. Being at university is a significant achievement, especially when you step out of what is known or expected in your community. The First Generation Connections Event will offer first generation students the opportunity to meet other students, staff and alumni, hear inspiring stories from our esteemed panellists and connect through social networking activities. The Connections Event aims to start a conversation, create visibility and foster meaningful connections that support our students to 鈥渟ee themselves鈥 at SWAG合集and persist to achieve their aspirations.

Why attend?鈥

  • Come and connect! Make meaningful connections with current students, staff and members of the Global SWAG合集Alumni who are first generation to attend university.鈥
  • Share your experiences, story and advice.鈥
  • Celebrate the unique strengths first generation students bring to the wider SWAG合集community.鈥

Why this is important:

Research shows almost half of Australia鈥檚 university student population are 鈥榝irst in family鈥 or first generation students. These students are known to experience a greater number of challenges and barriers throughout their journey through higher education.

Who:

A student, staff member or Alumni is considered first generation (or first in family) if their parents (or guardians) have not attended university. A student is first generation even if their siblings and/or other members of their family have attended university. First generation students include those with an Out of Home Care (OOHC) experience.
